Jim De Valentin
Jim De Valentin is a craftsman who has spent over forty years developing his skills as a wood turner and creator of fine timber products. He was born and still lives in Griffith, NSW, his parents having settled in the area after emigrating from Italy in 1926.
His early years were spent on the family farm. Jim was encouraged by his father to learn a trade, and so in 1954 he began his apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. It was not long bfore he acquired a reputation for producing work of a very high standard.
Jim's passion for timber found him spending much of his spare time exercising his joinery skills, creating quality timber furnishings for his family and friends. Over the years he has explored many aspects of his craft with particular focus in later years on wood turning.
Most of Jim's work uses local timbers, especially Red River Gum from forests around the
Murrambidgee River region. Now retired, Jim and his wife Iris enjoy regular trips to the river to ensure a good supply of raw materials. After the timber has been cut and prepared it is dried for up to three years before use. Eventually a piece will be chosen and transformed into something of unique beauty. Individually hand crafted, every item reflects Jims love for his work and his dedication to excellence in what he does.
