In The Frame began life as Riverina Framers Corner in 2002, when Jeff Wright established the business. He had been framing for 25 years before this. I began my training as a picture framer with Jeff in 2004 who taught me all the aspects of custom framing. At the time I was also attending art classes under Jeff’s tutorage.
Jeff wanted to spend more time teaching art and painting, and he didn’t like the paperwork that went with running a business, so he offered Riverina Framers Corner to me. In 2008 I, (in partnership with my husband Stuart), purchased the business and changed its name to “In The Frame”. Jeff enjoyed framing, and being surrounded by art and art supplies so he has continued working for me a couple of days a week and teaches art on the premises Tuesdays and
Wednesdays. All up Jeff and I have been together for 11 years.
I have always loved using my hands to create and construct. Although I held many various jobs ranging from Secretary to Mining operator (haul trucks, grader, blast hole drill and pit controller), art and sport were my hobbies. I was 1 of 7 children, brought up on a farm with 5 brothers and 1 sister. We were always busy climbing trees, digging forts, riding pushbikes, horses, motorbikes, fixing (and breaking) and pulling things apart. I drew and painted and I remember being very excited at the start of every school year when I received my new set of pencils. The smell of the new books and pencils when I unwrapped the brown paper book order, is unforgettable. I would use Dad’s grinder to sand a name plate into the pencil ends to write my name.
Picture framing is a combination of everything that I enjoy. I love seeing what other people are creating in the art world and the interesting and sometimes sentimental things that are brought in for framing.
I am privileged to help choose a frame and matting that will suit these precious items. I get to work on my feet, (sitting all day drives me crazy) and use my hands to make things. I am surrounded by beautiful and inspiring artworks in my Gallery which are for sale; art supplies that invoke the excitement and happy memories of the art storeroom when I was at Primary School and I love to help artists’ select art materials and assist with any technical questions they may have. I really enjoy contact with people. It’s lovely to develop the relationship with my customers to one of friendship. We like to make people happy and keep them coming back whether it’s for framing, art supplies or to buy artwork.
We really want to inspire people to create something original. We want to spread the message that art is a journey not a destination, so if you get joy out of creating just do it, don’t worry if it is not perfect.
We want to educate artists in the importance of using quality art materials. Cheap nasty canvasses that buckle and paint that peels off a painting you’re happy with can be heartbreaking and good products are easier to use.
We also want to encourage people to support Artists. Buy an original beautiful painting, jewellery piece, sculpture you will still love it long after the price is forgotten and no-one will ever have the same thing. We need to start thinking of our professional artists as highly skilled tradespeople.
In The Frame sells canvasses both stretched, on board, and per metre off the roll. We can provide linen and gessoed cotton – beautiful thick 15oz quality and triple primed. We can make any size of canvas on site with thick or thin stretcher bar, all on kiln dried pine. We also make canvas boards. We are renowned for stretching completed artworks and fabrics onto timber frames. A lot of people buy paintings on canvas overseas and bring them back rolled up. We stretch them or mount them down and/or frame them.
We are happy to order art supplies in for you if we do not carry it on our shop floor.
All our artworks are for sale, some people think that it is a display Gallery only. We also stock Christine Battocchio jewellery.
Christine is living in Melbourne, but grew up in Griffith. She is a qualified and gifted jeweller and used to sell through the Cottage Gallery. We sell timber bowls handcrafted by Jim De Valentin and gorgeous chopping boards by Phil Clarke. We will be extending our range of exclusive hand .....
In The Frame is the one stop shop for artists and art appreciators. We stock art supplies, we frame and we have beautiful works for sale in our Gallery. We take pride in our picture framing and have an eye for form and colour which helps us choose the most pleasing frame for your precious items.
It is important to get special items framed professionally. We use acid free materials, premium glass and quality timber frames. We have years of training and experience and know how to best present and preserve your photos, prints, original artworks, embroideries and memorabilia. We have had frames brought in that have ruined the artworks within. Photos stuck to the glass, yellowed, mildewed papers, hangers that have snapped and fallen off the wall. We have seen valuable footy jumpers stretched incorrectly and hot glued and stapled into place. We hand stitch and use tapestry tape, so that clothing is not damaged. It is much easier to do the job properly in the first place. People also need to know that a lot of the cheap ready-made frames available on the market are often plastic, are glued together (not stapled), have extremely thin and flawed glass (which can be dangerous especially on large frames), don’t have acid free matting and are not the correct size. It is important that large artworks under glass, have 3mm glass for safety reasons and the frame properly reinforced if a there is flex evident.
In The Frame is happy to package and ship artworks or supplies to our customers.
People are opting for stretched, unframed artworks or a minimal box type frame on large canvas works at the moment. Trends do come and go and we keep up to date with this, however, some classic frames remain popular.
Computerised matboard cutting equipment has meant less hand cutting and more precision. Online shopping has challenged small businesses in all industries, however, we retain that excellent customer service and product satisfaction will keep us busy. We have developed this website to promote In The Frame to a broader audience and showcase what we have available here in country NSW.
